# Enterprise SEO FAQ

The questions companies ask most about Enterprise SEO, answered by Malte Landwehr: what it is, what it costs, who should own it, which tools to use, and how to make it work on websites with millions of URLs.

Published 2 October 2026, last updated 2 October 2026.

## Summary

Enterprise SEO means one of two things. Either the website is huge, usually a million URLs or more, or the company is. On a huge website, templates, crawl management and index management move the needle, not single pages. In a huge company, stakeholder management, change management and company politics decide what gets done. An in-house team is the way to win when SEO is a top channel. An agency is the better fit when it is not. The most important ingredient is the person leading the SEO team. That person has to be a good SEO, a good manager and a good communicator at the same time.

## Why Malte Landwehr answers these questions

[Malte Landwehr](https://www.maltelandwehr.de/) has worked in SEO for over 20 years. He has done Enterprise SEO under both of the definitions on this page: on a website with millions of URLs, and inside a company where SEO competes with every other department for attention and budget.

From 2020 to 2025 he ran SEO at idealo, the largest price comparison website in the world. As Head of SEO he owned SEO and content marketing for 30+ websites in 10+ countries. As VP of SEO he was a member of the Executive Team, led a business unit of four teams and 30+ people, and was responsible for the company's most important traffic channel. Together with his teams, idealo became the largest winner of Google's July 2021 Core Update in Germany, according to Sistrix.

Before that, from 2015 to 2020, he worked at Searchmetrics, among other roles as VP Product, on a B2B SaaS platform for Enterprise SEO and content marketing. So he has seen Enterprise SEO from the in-house side and from the vendor side. Today he is CPO and CMO of Peec AI. He has given 100+ conference talks in 5+ countries, many of them on Enterprise SEO. The full history is on the [speaker page](https://www.maltelandwehr.de/speaker/).

## Basics and definition

### What is Enterprise SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?

Enterprise SEO has two definitions. The first is about the size of the website. The second is about the size of the company.

By the first definition, Enterprise SEO starts at around a million pages, maybe even at a few hundred thousand. At that size, optimising a single page, title, meta description or piece of content rarely moves the needle. What moves it is programmatic work on templates. You optimise how the title tag is generated for 2 million URLs. You optimise the HTML template that displays 600,000 articles. You change how product data is shown on 10 million product pages. Crawl management and index management matter just as much. Both are minor topics on most websites. On these large ones they are crucial.

By the second definition, a website with only 100 URLs can still be Enterprise SEO. A large pharmaceutical company is a typical example. Here the work is mostly stakeholder management and change management. You advocate internally for SEO as a priority, pitch projects, secure funding, and talk to the CFO and the CMO. Company politics become very, very important.

### When does a company need Enterprise SEO? Is it page count, revenue or organisational complexity?

A company needs Enterprise SEO because of page count or organisational complexity. On page count, the threshold is usually 1 million pages or more. On complexity, a rough threshold is 1,000+ people working on the website, or 10,000+ people in the whole company.

### What does an Enterprise SEO team look like, and who reports to whom?

Enterprise SEO teams differ enormously from company to company. There is usually a Head of SEO. There is at least one technical SEO. Everything beyond that depends on the company and on what the website needs.

## Budget, ROI and tools

### How much does Enterprise SEO cost?

In the US, an Enterprise SEO agency starts at around $20,000 per month. That is the absolute lowest end, and most engagements cost more. In Europe, the same amount is usually the top of what companies spend on an Enterprise SEO agency.

Budgets go higher once content production, digital PR or link building are included. Most of that money passes straight through the agency. It carries a very different margin.

### Should we build an in-house team, hire an agency, or do both?

If SEO is one of your top marketing channels and you want to win, build an in-house team. It is the only way to get excellent results that your competitors cannot easily copy.

If you are a large, well-known brand and SEO is not among your top two or three marketing channels, hire an Enterprise SEO agency. An agency has two advantages. You can cut the cost much faster. And it can start immediately, without a long ramp-up phase. Hiring an in-house team can take 6 to 12 months before it is fully in place and everything runs smoothly.

### How do you prove SEO ROI to a CFO or board?

Proving SEO ROI depends on the business model. Usually SEO should be part of your marketing mix modelling and attribution. That shows what role it plays in the user journey and gives you the revenue of the channel.

For the ROI, you need controlled experiments. At the very least, run a pre-post analysis of every change so you can show the uplift. You also have to be willing to forecast and estimate the impact of what you do.

### How long until Enterprise SEO shows results?

How fast Enterprise SEO shows results depends on how good the SEO is. It depends just as much on how much you can actually implement, and how quickly. Malte Landwehr has seen a very large German company take 12 months to change the H1 on its homepage. With that much lag before a measure even goes live, results take a long time to show.

The upside of a large website is the reverse. If you have access and make smart decisions, you can have massive impact in a very short time.

### What are the best Enterprise SEO tools? Do you need Botify, seoClarity, Conductor or BrightEdge?

The best Enterprise SEO tool depends on what you are aiming for. If you want excellent SEO, you probably do not want seoClarity, Conductor or BrightEdge. These are tools for CMOs to keep their marketing team happy. They are good enough for SEO, and they tick every box the CDO, CFO, CMO and CIO are looking for. For a large company, that often makes them the right choice. Botify in particular can be a very good solution for a large enterprise that wants reliable and predictable average SEO.

If you want to be excellent, pick the best point solution in each market instead. When Malte Landwehr was VP of SEO at idealo, his team had access to a dozen different SEO tools. The goal was to always have the best data and the best solution for everything. At idealo, Enterprise SEO was defined by the size of the website, and SEO was the most important marketing channel.

## Organisation and governance

### How do you get buy-in from leadership, product and engineering?

Start with the right person in charge. You need a Head of SEO or Director of SEO who is a good SEO, a good manager and a good communicator at the same time. Product managers, engineers and the leadership team each need a different language. The CMO needs the information the CMO cares about. The CFO needs the information the CFO cares about. The same goes for everyone else.

With that person in place, you need three more things:

- The ability to forecast your SEO measures properly.
- The confidence to talk about SEO at the level each stakeholder needs.
- Executional excellence in your team.

The person leading the SEO team is the single most important ingredient of good Enterprise SEO.

### How do you get SEO fixes into the dev backlog when engineering needs a six-week lead time?

Accept the lead time as the pace the company has chosen, and work with it. If engineering needs six weeks, your SEO changes take six weeks too. That should not be the big challenge. The alternative is to work with the leadership of product and engineering to get around the lead time.

Never forget that in Enterprise SEO you are a cog in the machine. If the machine is dysfunctional, spend some of your time fixing it. Spend some of your time working with the dysfunctional setup, too, so that things still get done.

### How do you govern SEO across many markets, business units, brands and CMS teams?

Governance starts with monitoring that the SEO team owns. Internally, that is usually something like Grafana, but it depends on what the company already uses. Externally, it is a crawler. Audisto is the best-in-class option. Crawl the website, or parts of it, every single day, and define a lot of rules and alerts.

Then think of everything that can go wrong and hurt your SEO, and monitor it. Start with the basics: a title tag that is suddenly empty, or a product page whose product description is missing. Then think further ahead. Look for every second-order and third-order effect that ends in an SEO problem.

A specific example shows the way of thinking. Say new products are added to a Google Sheet, and the database is updated from that sheet. What happens if someone removes products from the sheet by accident? If the product pages then disappear from the website, you need monitoring for it. Check whether the file size of that sheet decreases.

The other half is people. Talk to the leaders of the other teams. Make sure they understand how important SEO is for the business, and how their work affects SEO performance. Praise them whenever you can. Make it visible when a team does something good for SEO. Then convince them to set up health metrics with their own monitoring and alerting.

A content team is a good example. Say it usually publishes five blog articles a day. If it drops to two a day, that is probably bad for your SEO. So the team should track a health metric that keeps it at five.

### Who should own SEO: marketing, product or engineering?

Never engineering. SEO belongs in marketing or in product. In a marketing-led organisation it is totally fine in marketing. In a product-led organisation it should probably sit in product.

Another way to decide is to look at your growth lever. If your growth comes from on-page SEO, such as improving the template for 3,000 tag pages or for half a million news articles, SEO belongs in product. If your growth comes from content marketing or from producing editorial content, it belongs in marketing. A bank without much templated content is a typical case for marketing.

## Technical SEO at scale

### How do you manage crawl budget and indexation on millions of URLs?

Start with data. You need a data source that holds everything you need, and that usually means a lot of Google Search Console properties. Set one up for every subfolder, every subdomain and every country domain. Set one up for the www and the non-www version, and for HTTPS and HTTP. Pull all of that data into one central place, so you always see when something goes wrong.

Also split your XML sitemap into many smaller sitemaps. When Search Console reports an error, you then see which sitemap it occurred in. Is it the sitemap for product pages or the one for category pages? Is it your English content or your translated Japanese content? Make it as granular as possible.

### How do you handle international SEO: hreflang, ccTLDs vs. subfolders, and localisation?

Most of the time, Enterprise SEO starts with an existing setup. So the choice between country-code domains, subdomains and subfolders is rarely the first question. What matters most is a proper hreflang setup, and content that is localised, not just translated.

If you do get to choose, it depends on your business. One central .com domain is totally fine if your product is exactly the same everywhere, you are one of the best-known brands on the internet, and people mainly come to your website for information.

Country-code domains help when your product or service is localised, your brand is not that well known, and people enter their credit card details or buy on your website. A local domain builds trust with a local audience. Country-code domains also help in regulated markets. They let you comply with each country's requirements without hurting the website's performance in other countries.

### How do you scale content and templates without thin, duplicate or spammy pages?

With really, really good quality assurance. When Malte Landwehr was VP of SEO at idealo, the largest price comparison website in the world, quality assurance sometimes took multiple person-months. It is a crazy important part of the work.

It also means having rules for rejecting work from other teams. A team can still build its pages. But they will be set to noindex, because Google should not index them. Or they will sit behind a robots.txt block, because they are too poor for Google to see at all. Sometimes the team is fine with that, because it only needs the landing pages for paid social. Very often, though, the team wants the SEO traffic as well. Then it has to work with you to improve the pages.

## Career and hiring

### How do you become an Enterprise SEO lead?

Start by being a very good SEO. On top of that, you need empathy for many different kinds of stakeholders, and you need to speak their language. You also need good leadership skills and good stakeholder management. And you need to be able to deal with company politics.

### How do you hire an Enterprise SEO lead, and what should the job description say?

Hire for the same things, and write them into the job description. The candidate has to be a very good SEO first. They need empathy for many different stakeholders and the ability to speak each one's language. They need proven leadership skills and good stakeholder management. And they need to be able to deal with company politics. SEO expertise alone does not make an Enterprise SEO lead.
